Terrorism - Central Council of Jews on arrests: Threat frightening

The Central Council of Jews has expressed concern about possible plans by the Islamist group Hamas to attack Jewish institutions in Europe. This "shows in a frightening way how acute the terrorist threat is in Germany too", said Central Council President Josef Schuster in Berlin on Thursday. "At the same time, it is reassuring to see how vigilant the security authorities are in protecting Jewish life in Germany. My thanks go to them."

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office had previously confirmed that four suspected members of Hamas had been arrested in Berlin and the Netherlands. They are suspected of being members of a foreign terrorist organization, according to the prosecution. Specifically, it is about weapons that were to be kept ready for possible attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe.

From spring 2023 at the latest, one of the defendants based in Berlin was involved in locating an underground depot with weapons in Europe on behalf of Hamas, which the organization had set up there in the past. There is said to be no direct connection with the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.
