Before community day - Central Council of Jews: Hostility unbearable
At the start of the Jewish Community Day in Berlin, the Central Council of Jews has described the anti-Semitic hostility in Germany as intolerable. "It is frightening for me to see openly anti-Semitic demonstrations on German streets," said President Josef Schuster on rbb24 Inforadio on Thursday. It is also frightening when Jewish people who are recognizable as such, for example with a kippah, are attacked, spat at and insulted on German streets. "I think this is a situation that is intolerable," said Schuster.
Jews from all over Germany are coming together for a community day in Berlin from this Thursday to Sunday. More than 1,000 participants are expected under the motto "Living Together".
Among other things, workshops, discussions and lectures are planned. According to Schuster, all the topics and workshops dealing with Israel were "booked up very quickly". At a demonstration against anti-Semitism in Berlin at the weekend, the President said: "Sometimes I don't recognize this country. Something has gone off the rails."
