Statistics - Census: Thuringia rents favorably compared to other states
The rents in Thuringia are significantly below the federal average. This is evident from the latest census data released by the Statistical Office in Erfurt. The average net rent for rented apartments was determined to be €5.65 per square meter for 2022. The federal average was €7.28 per square meter.
The Thuringian Housing Industry Association, which represents municipal and cooperative companies, currently assumes an average net rent of €5.47 per square meter for its market segment. However, there is a significant difference in rents between urban and rural areas. In particular, Jena, Erfurt, and Weimar are considered expensive.
According to a statement from the Office, Thuringia, along with Saxony-Anhalt (with an average of €5.38 net per square meter) and Saxony (€5.72), belongs to the German states with the most affordable net rents. The highest net rents were found in Hamburg, at €9.16 per square meter.
The census, a comprehensive survey conducted every few years, revealed a total of 1,167,277 housing units in the state. Approximately half of these were rental apartments. More than half of the apartments were heated with gas (52.3%), while nearly a fifth were heated with district heating (22.2%). The share of renewable energy sources was only 6.9%, but still close to the German average of 7.2%.
