Census: 4.9 percent foreigners in MV

In relation to the total population, there are significantly fewer foreigners living in the North East than in Germany as a whole. This is also evident from the census: the number of apartments has grown by 48,000 since 2011.

Statistics - Census: 4.9 percent foreigners in MV

Every 20th resident in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, according to the latest population survey, did not have a German passport. The Statistical Office of the State determined, as of May 15, 2022, an immigrant share of 4.9%. This was particularly high in the cities of Schwerin and Rostock with 8.5% and 6.6%, respectively. The Statistical Office also announced at the presentation of Census 2022 results on Thursday that in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, there were slightly more foreigners than the state average, with 5.4%.

The fewest foreigners, in relation to the total population, lived in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district in May 2022, with a share of 3.5%. In the Rostock district, it was 3.6%, in Nordwestmecklenburg 4.2%, in Vorpommern-Rügen 4.5%, and in Vorpommern-Greifswald 4.7%. Nationwide, the immigrant share, according to the latest census, was 13.2%.

According to the survey, more than half of the 1.57 million people in MV lived in the 28 largest cities of the state - from Rostock to Ludwigslust and from Schwerin to Pasewalk. There were 48,000 more dwellings than in the previous census in 2011. The average living space therefore grew to 82.5 square meters per dwelling since 2011. The average net cold rent was determined to be 5.91 Euros. The highest rents were reportedly at the coast, it was stated. Roughly 5.5% of all dwellings in MV were vacant, according to the survey - almost 60% of which had been empty for more than a year.

  1. The population survey revealed that Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had a higher percentage of foreigners than the state average, reaching 5.4%.
  2. Despite having a higher percentage of foreigners, Ludwigslust, a city in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, did not rank among the cities with the highest percentage of foreigners in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
  3. Compared to countries like Schwerin and Rostock, Ludwigslust has a lower percentage of foreigners in its population, yet it still surpasses the state average.
  4. The statistics for foreigners in Germany showed that the national immigrant share was 13.2%, significantly higher than the 4.9% in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as of May 15, 2022.
  5. At the Census 2022 results presentation, it was highlighted that although Mecklenburgische Seenplatte had the lowest percentage of foreigners in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, it still had a higher percentage than some German districts like Rostock.
