- Census 2022 - Leipzig is examining its own survey results
Leipzig has expressed openness to a similar approach following the announcement from Halle (Saale) that it intends to verify the results of the 2022 census using its own survey. The city of Leipzig assumes that the data from the registration office is reliable, the Department of General Administration has stated. "A complementary validation of the registration data, as in Halle, is an interesting option that is currently being examined without prejudice."
The city of Halle announced on Monday that it plans to conduct its own survey. To do this, all persons registered in the registration office will be contacted by letter. The exact population will be determined based on the letters that cannot be delivered and their verification. According to the statistical calculation of the census 2022, only 226,586 people live in Halle, while 243,453 people are registered in the registration office.
Saxony has many cities and communities with decreases - a total of 42,000 fewer inhabitants. "The deviations have caused some irritation in the affected cities," the Saxon Association of Cities and Communities stated.
The population figure for Leipzig was significantly corrected downwards. Instead of the previously assumed approximately 612,400, there were only approximately 599,000 inhabitants as of May 15, 2022 - the largest decrease in absolute numbers in Saxony.
Chemnitz follows with approximately 240,000 instead of approximately 246,400 inhabitants. A spokesman for the city stated that the newly determined population number would initially only be noted. The city of Chemnitz does not yet have access to the results of the individual procedural steps with which the Federal Statistical Office determined this number, so it is not yet possible to understand or evaluate how it is justified.
The City of Leipzig is considering implementing a complementary validation of its registration data, similar to Halle's approach, to ensure the accuracy of its census results. This approach would be under consideration by The Court of Justice, as it might involve dealing with potential legal issues associated with conducting a separate survey.
Despite the differing population figures, both Halle and Leipzig are planning to approach the verification of their census results, highlighting the importance of data accuracy and transparency for these cities.
