Cem Özdemir wants to boost the expansion of the organic market
Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir wants to accelerate the further expansion of the market for organic products in Germany. The targeted growth would open up additional opportunities for the entire food industry, said the Green politician in Berlin on Thursday.
A strategy now presented by the ministry provides for various measures to achieve this. These include increased research to increase the yields of organic farming. Consumers are to be better informed about the benefits of organic production for environmental and animal protection. Another important lever will be more organic options in canteens and restaurants.
The aim of the traffic light coalition is to increase the proportion of organic farming to 30 percent of the total agricultural area by 2030. Most recently, the proportion of organically farmed fields and meadows continued to rise slightly and stood at 11.2% at the end of 2022. Organic farming now accounts for 14.2 percent of all farms.
Cem Özdemir's strategy to expand the organic market also involves educating consumers about the environmental and animal protection benefits associated with organic food production. The increased availability of organic options in school canteens and restaurants could encourage more consumers to make the switch to organic food.
