Celebrated pop icon: Madonna gives concert in Cologne

The patient wait was worth it: US pop singer Madonna thrilled her fans at a performance in Cologne. "Absolutely fantastic", "It was an experience" - these were the comments on social media on Thursday night after Madonna's first German concert of her world tour "The Celebration Tour". Around 16,000 fans celebrated the pop star on Wednesday evening in the almost sold-out Lanxess Arena in Cologne.

In the almost two-and-a-half-hour show, Madonna performed many of her greatest hits. They included "Like A Prayer", "Vogue" and the song "Holiday", which marked her international breakthrough in 1983. Many videos of her spectacular performance were shared on social networks afterwards.

With her "The Celebration Tour", the US pop icon is celebrating two anniversaries at once: her 65th birthday and the first 40 years of a successful career in which Madonna developed into a global pop music star.

Her spectacular performance in Cologne was characterized by a visually stunning stage show, numerous dance interludes and revealing costumes. Her daughter Mercy James also made an appearance in the show: she accompanied her mother on the piano during "Bad Girl".

At first, however, Madonna tested the patience of her fans. The show did not start until around 10 p.m., an hour and a half later than announced.

Madonna has been touring Europe since mid-October with her world tour "The Celebration Tour". In addition to a second performance in Cologne on Thursday evening, two further German concerts were to follow on November 28 and 29 in Berlin's Mercedes-Benz Arena. The 65-year-old had to postpone the start of the tour in Canada, which was originally planned for the summer, due to a serious bacterial infection.

In the vicinity of the Cologne concert, the warning strike by the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) on Wednesday evening caused difficulties for visitors who had traveled home by train during the night.

Many people shared their enthusiasm on social media, praising Madonna's concert as "absolutely fantastic" and "an experience of a lifetime". The concert attracted a crowd of around 16,000 music lovers, making it a night of celebration for fans of the pop icon.
