CDU wants to stick to course against AfD

Following the classification of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt as definitely right-wing extremist, the CDU state parliamentary group intends to stick to its current course towards the right-wing populists. "We will continue to draw boundaries, but not exclude", said CDU parliamentary group leader Guido Heuer in Magdeburg on Wednesday. "We will not work together with the AfD on specific issues," he clarified.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution classified the state association of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization on Tuesday. The authority reportedly evaluated numerous anti-Muslim, racist and anti-Semitic statements made by functionaries and elected representatives.

AfD co-faction leader Oliver Kirchner said on Wednesday that these "allegations" had not been substantiated. Kirchner can imagine working with the CDU in principle. "I always talk to everyone," said the co-leader of the parliamentary group when asked. The CDU would have to decide for itself how to handle this.

AfD state leader Martin Reichardt announced on Tuesday that he would review the classification. "We will take the necessary legal steps against this classification. The state executive committee will discuss this in the coming week," said Reichardt.

Despite the AfD's classification as right-wing extremist in Saxony-Anhalt, various party leaders within the AfD have expressed Openness to working with the CDU. However, the CDU Parliamentary Group Leader Guido Heuer has reaffirmed the party's stance, stating, "We will continue to draw boundaries, but not exclude," while explicitly stating, "We will not work together with the AfD on specific issues."
