Parties - CDU state executive opposes Mohring's renewed candidacy
Thuringia's former CDU leader Mike Mohring is to give up his political offices and no longer run for the state parliament, according to the CDU state executive. A party spokesperson announced on Wednesday that the state executive board had passed a resolution to this effect on Tuesday evening. The background to this are allegations of payment irregularities against Mohring. The 51-year-old is a member of the CDU federal executive, chairman of the conference of budget and financial policy spokespersons of the CDU/CSU state parliamentary groups and a member of the federal executive of the SME and Economic Union.
The allegations relate to bills for his private birthday party, which were paid by the CDU district association. Following criticism of the process, Mohring claimed that he wanted to pay the bills himself. They had "certainly not been addressed in good faith to my office in Bad Berka, but to the CDU in Weimarer Land in Apolda", Mohring explained. He has since paid the bills himself.
A few weeks ago, the former Thuringian CDU top candidate and state party and parliamentary group leader lost his position as CDU district chairman in Weimarer Land and as parliamentary group chairman in the district council over the matter.
The CDU set up a commission to investigate the incident. According to a spokesperson, the commission has now come to the conclusion that the district association paid twelve invoices totaling 8377.93 euros for Mohring's birthday party. "This has permanently damaged the trust in him as a mandate and office holder," the spokesperson said. The state executive committee has therefore called on Mohring to draw personal consequences. "He should resign from his political offices in the CDU and its associations and refrain from standing as a candidate in the 2024 state elections."

The CDU in Thuringia's decision to oppose Mike Mohring's renewed candidacy stems from allegations of payment irregularities involving his private birthday party. Despitepaying the bills himself after initial criticism, the CDU district association had originally covered the costs of the event.
Mike Mohring served as the former CDU leader in Thuringia and held several prominent positions within the party, including being a member of the CDU federal executive, chairing the conference of budget and financial policy spokespersons for the CDU/CSU state parliamentary groups, and serving as a member of the federal executive of the SME and Economic Union.
The CDU state executive in Thuringia has requested that Mike Mohring resign from his political offices and refrain from running as a candidate in the 2024 state elections in response to the payment irregularities scandal, effectively ending his political career within the party.
