Drug policy - CDU parliamentary group wants to restrict the sale of nitrous oxide

The Berlin CDU-Faction will limit the sale and use of Lachgas. For this purpose, they will urge the Senate to initiate a corresponding Bundesrat initiative. The goal is to regulate the sale of Lachgas (Nitrous Oxide) in order to protect children and adolescents from health-endangering misuse, as stated in a draft resolution that the Faction plans to discuss and pass during its scheduled weekend caucus.

CDU-Faction Warns Against Misuse

The number of cases of Lachgas misuse among children and adolescents is increasing. According to surveys, it is one of the most consumed drugs among schoolgirls and boys. The gas is easily accessible and affordable, argue CDU parliamentarians.

Europe-wide and in Germany, the number of people with problematic consumption behavior is rising. Misuse poses the risk of significant health damage. "Every year, hundreds of people in Europe die from it."

Legislative Details Still Open

It remains to be seen whether regulation should take place under the Youth Protection Law or the New Psychoactive Substances Law. Possible alternatives, such as sales and possession bans modeled after other European countries, could be more effective, as the Petitions Committee of the German Bundestag supports in its resolution recommendation of June 12, which calls for a sales ban for persons under 18 years of age.

  1. The House of Representatives' CDU-Faction is pushing for stricter regulations on the sale and use of Nitrous Oxide, aiming to protect children and teenagers from potential health risks associated with its misuse.
  2. During a weekend caucus, the CDU-Faction intends to discuss and pass a resolution limiting the sale and use of Nitrous Oxide, a popular drug among teenagers, due to its increasing misuse and health risks.
  3. In light of the rising misuse of Nitrous Oxide among children and adolescents, Berlin's CDU-Faction is encouraging the Senate to initiate a Bundesrat initiative, aiming to reduce the availability and affordability of this harmful substance.
  4. Recognizing the severe health consequences of Nitrous Oxide misuse, CDU parliamentarians are advocating for stricter drug policies, arguing that the gas's accessibility and low cost contribute to its widespread use among teenagers.
  5. The CDU-Faction, aiming to promote healthiness and well-being, is pushing for stricter regulations on Nitrous Oxide sales and use, as part of a broader effort to combat problematic drug consumption among children and adolescents in Germany.
