CDU parliamentary group leader Thering against changing the debt brake

Hamburg's CDU parliamentary group leader Dennis Thering has spoken out against a relaxation of the debt brake. "The debt brake exists for good reasons and it applies," said Thering on Sunday. The consequence of an unconstitutional budget could not be to amend the constitution. What is needed is a return to a solid and constitutional budget policy.

"The fact that the traffic light now only knows how to help itself with the retrospective declaration of an "emergency" is nothing more than a white lie and also not in the spirit of the recent ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court," said Thering. The debt brake is a guarantee for intergenerational justice. Instead, the federal government would have to scrap numerous party-political projects. "The billion-euro "citizen's income" should be stopped immediately, especially as it sets completely the wrong incentives." For many people capable of working, it is more lucrative to receive a citizen's allowance than to go to work.

On November 15, the Federal Constitutional Court declared the federal government's second supplementary budget for 2021 unconstitutional and null and void due to violations of the debt brake exceptions. With the budget amendment, the federal government wanted to invest loans in climate protection that were originally intended for coronavirus measures.

  1. The Federal Government's decision to invest loans for climate protection, originally intended for coronavirus measures, was deemed unconstitutional by the Federal Constitutional Court.
  2. Dennis Thering, the CDU parliamentary group leader in Hamburg, believes that the debt brake is a guarantee for intergenerational justice and urgently calls for a return to a solid and constitutional budget policy.
  3. According to Thering, the process of amending the constitution as a consequence of an unconstitutional budget would not be appropriate, and the Bundestag should focus on scrapping party-political projects instead.
  4. The Bundestag's decision to declare an "emergency" and retroactively justify their budget amendments is criticized by Thering as a white lie, contradicting the judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court.
