Parliament - CDU parliamentary group leader Schnieder accuses Raab of deception

Rhineland-Palatinate CDU parliamentary group leader Gordon Schnieder has accused State Secretary Heike Raab (SPD) of deceiving the state parliament, the press and broadcasting committees. Something like this does not happen by chance or by mistake and is unacceptable, Schnieder said at a special session of the state parliament in Mainz on Wednesday. Raab's letter to SWR criticizing a report on SWR television was part of a "large-scale intimidation plan".

Raab later tried to deceive the media committee with statements. Untruths still persisted. Raab had not succeeded in refuting the allegations against her personally. Schnieder called on Minister President Malu Dreyer (SPD) to dismiss Raab as the state's representative to the federal government and for Europe and the media. The "Raab case" is a "synonym for maintaining power at any price, for red felt and party-political nepotism".

The special session requested by the opposition factions of the CDU and Free Voters concerned a letter from Raab to SWR state broadcasting director Ulla Fiebig in the spring about an advertisement on SWR television. This in turn revolved around the political future of SPD politician Roger Lewentz, who had resigned as Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister in connection with the Ahr Valley flood disaster.

The opposition sees this letter as an inadmissible attempt to influence reporting in favor of a party colleague and as a threat against the broadcaster, also because the letter had a letterhead from the state government. Raab admitted mistakes last week and resigned from SWR committees.
