Environment - CDU parliamentary group leader: More commitment to Elbe flood protection

According to CDU parliamentary group leader Sebastian Lechner, flood protection for the Elbe is being neglected in Lower Saxony. Saxony-Anhalt has learned its lessons from previous floods and has now raised the Elbe dykes almost across the board, according to a letter from Lechner to Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil (SPD), which was made available to dpa on Thursday.

According to the letter, millions are available in Lower Saxony for this urgently needed measure. Lechner accused several state environment ministers of the past legislative periods of failing to present a consistent concept for flood protection along the Elbe. The criticism was also directed at the current Environment Minister Christian Meyer (Greens).

The letter goes on to say that even a decade after the last major flood, there are still considerable weaknesses in the dykes, particularly in the Lüchow-Dannenberg area. A viable concept must be presented as soon as possible, Lechner demanded.
