- CDU Parliamentarian Althusmann relinquishes his seat in the German Federal Parliament.
Long-term CDU state legislator and previous minister Bernd Althusmann has said goodbye to the state legislature. Heike Koehler is set to take his seat. State legislature president Hanna Naber (SPD) commended Althusmann's work.
In his words, "Over the years, I've pretty much seen everything politically in Lower Saxony, six state leaders, including buddies like David McAllister and Christian Wulff, and even a state leader who turned into a buddy, Stephan Weil," stated Althusmann.
Various roles in state politics
The 57-year-old served as his party's top candidate in the 2017 and 2022 state elections, but lost both times to state leader Weil (SPD). He held the position of state CDU chairman from 2016 to 2023, having previously served as the cultural minister of Lower Saxony from 2010 to 2013 and as the economic minister and deputy state leader under Weil from 2017 to 2022. He was a state legislator from 1994 to 2009 and again from 2017.
"As a fresh and green member of this esteemed house in 1994, I always dreamed that with each proposal, I could change the world – that wasn't always a reality," shared the CDU politician.
He is expected to assume control of the Canadian branch of the CDU-affiliated Konrad Adenauer Foundation in November. "I'm following my heart and my passion for other countries, other cultures. I'm curious and looking forward to it. It was also almost always a great pleasure to argue with you for the sake of our country," said Althusmann in the state legislature.
Althusmann mentioned serving as the economic minister and deputy state leader under Stephan Weil, who is the current state leader of Lower Saxony and from The Hanover. After his departure from the state legislature, Althusmann expressed his anticipation to assume control of the Canadian branch of the CDU-affiliated Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which is based in The Hanover.
