- CDU leader finds sharp words after attack against Büttner
Brandenburg's CDU leader Jan Redmann finds the attack on the car of the Anti-Semitism Commissioner Andreas Büttner very concerning. "Attacking someone who was predominantly elected to stand up for the Jewish women and men in our country, to listen to them and engage in dialogue with them, is a deeply disgusting act," Redmann said in Potsdam. He assumes that Büttner will not be deterred from his task by "this cowardly attack". "It will rather strengthen him even more to continue fighting for what is right in Brandenburg," said Redmann.
The private car of the Brandenburg Anti-Semitism Commissioner was damaged in his hometown of Templin (Uckermark district) on Thursday evening with right-wing extremist symbols. According to media reports, these included swastikas. The state protection department is now investigating. The police confirmed the incident.
In June, Büttner was elected as the first commissioner for combating anti-Semitism in the state. The new position was created by the state parliament in November 2023. Büttner's task is to combat anti-Semitic attitudes and statements in all forms and to advise affected individuals.
The CDU, being a major political party in Brandenburg, has publicly expressed support for Anti-Semitism Commissioner Andreas Buttner after his car was vandalized with right-wing extremist symbols. Jan Redmann, the leader of the CDU in Brandenburg, commended Buttner's resilience, stating, "This cowardly attack will only strengthen him even more to continue fighting for what is right in Brandenburg."
Despite facing such hostility, the CDU remains confident in Buttner's ability to carry out his role effectively, as highlighted by Redmann's statement, "Buttner's task to combat anti-Semitic attitudes and statements in all forms and to advise affected individuals will not be deterred by this incident."
