Schools - CDU leader calls for "holistic update" of the education system

CDU party and parliamentary group leader Manuel Hagel is calling for the education system in Baden-Württemberg to be put to the test. "We need a holistic update for our education system," said Hagel on Monday in Stuttgart. The schools in Baden-Württemberg need to become top class again. "I am campaigning for us to look at all key areas of education and focus on this vision," said Hagel. The question of whether grammar schools should last eight or nine years in future is an important building block, "on an equal footing with other building blocks".

In the coalition agreement, the Green-Black coalition had actually agreed not to engage in structural debates on education policy.

Previously, a citizens' forum convened by the state government on the future of the grammar school had recommended a return to a nine-year grammar school. According to the report, 49 of the 55 randomly selected citizens were in favor of a "new G9" becoming the norm at grammar schools in the state. However, according to the forum, at least one grammar school per district should also offer a G8 course. At the same time, the citizens' forum spoke out in favor of a "holistic, cross-school type school reform".

On Tuesday, the leaders of the coalition want to discuss the next steps.
