CDU in Hesse wants to name possible coalition partner
Following confidential committee meetings, the Hessian CDU will probably announce its choice of coalition partner this Friday in Wiesbaden. It could come down to the Greens or the SPD. According to the German Press Agency, CDU state leader and Minister President Boris Rhein and CDU parliamentary group leader Ines Claus are expected to inform the media about the eagerly awaited decision.
As the clear winner of the state elections on October 8, the CDU can choose whether to forge a new coalition government in Wiesbaden with the Greens or with the SPD, which has so far been in opposition. In recent weeks, it has held confidential exploratory talks with both parties in small groups. The coalition talks could begin next week.
The FDP, which only just made it back into the Wiesbaden state parliament, is not mathematically necessary for a resumption of the black-green alliance or the first black-red coalition in the state's history. The CDU did not want to explore a coalition with the right-wing populist AfD, which gained significant strength in the election. The Left Party was kicked out of the state parliament in the election. The new parliament will be constituted on January 18, 2024.
The CDU's decision to partner with either the Greens or the SPD in Hesse's Parliament for the upcoming coalition government is highly anticipated, given their success in the state elections. This choice will significantly shape the political landscape of the region for the upcoming legislative period.
