Security - CDU calls for more video surveillance at Christmas markets
According to the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament of Lower Saxony, security at Christmas markets could be increased by expanding video surveillance. "Effective video surveillance not only serves to prevent attacks, but also to identify perpetrators of crimes more quickly," said CDU interior politician André Bock in a statement published on Monday. The parliamentary group also called for a legal basis for the use of drones at Christmas markets.
A 20-year-old Iraqi was arrested in Helmstedt on November 21. According to the State Criminal Police Office of Lower Saxony, the police had evidence that the man was planning a serious act of violence. He was allegedly planning to attack visitors to a Christmas market. The police in Lower Saxony are investigating him on suspicion of a planned terrorist attack.
