CDU and SPD parliamentary groups agree on the budget
The governing factions of the CDU and SPD have agreed on the main features of Berlin's 2024/25 double budget. This was announced by the parliamentary group chairmen Dirk Stettner (CDU) and Raed Saleh (SPD) on Monday. Stettner emphasized that the budget is not a "social slash-and-burn budget - on the contrary". However, politicians must now initiate a course of consolidation so that there is no threat of austerity in the next double budget in 2026/2027.
Saleh explained that one focus of the new budget was social issues. After all, nothing is more important than social peace in a society. Stettner named transport and education policy as other priorities, as well as social cohesion. A lot of money will be invested in the security and visibility of Jewish life in the city.
The 2024/2025 double budget has a volume of around 40 billion euros for each year. A large part of this is personnel expenditure, with more than twelve billion euros allocated to this item in both years. The budget is due to be approved by the House of Representatives in December.
The agreement on the budget by the CDU and SPD parliamentary groups will be presented to the House of Representatives for approval, as they are the governing parties in Berlin. Despite focusing on social issues and investments in areas like education and transportation, the budget aims to prevent austerity measures in the future household budgets.
