A tight battle is ongoing between Uwe Melzer (CDU) and Heiko Philipp (AfD) in the county council chair race in Altenburg. As per records from the state election commissioner, after the counting of 43 out of the 104 voting precincts, Melzer obtained 50.8% of the ballots cast, compared to Philipp's 49.2%. In the first county council elections two weeks prior, the AfD came out on top in Altenburg: Philipp raked in 33.0% of the votes, with Melzer trailing close behind him at 32.3%.
