- CDP Politician's Amicable Bond with WeilTransforms into Strain
CDU rep Bernd Althusmann, discussing his party's loss in the state election, hints that his amicable connection with Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil (SPD) might have played a role. "Maybe I held back a bit during the campaign due to that," Althusmann shared with the "New Osnabrueck Newspaper". At 57, he was the CDU's leading candidate in the elections of 2017 and 2022, both of which he lost to Weil. From 2016 to 2023, he served as the chair of the CDU in the state, previously holding the position of Minister of Culture in Lower Saxony from 2010 to 2013 and the role of Minister of Economics and Deputy Minister President under Weil from 2017 to 2022.
"I'm not departing with resentment," Althusmann emphasized. He admitted to having accomplished almost everything, apart from the position of Minister President, which he desperately wanted. "I truly wished I could have had that and went after it with fervor," the politician shared.
Althusmann mentioned that his pleasant relationship with Weil might have influenced his approach during the 'Election to the Landtag' in 2017 and 2022. Despite his losses, he expressed his eagerness to hold the position of Minister President in these elections.
