Catholic schools: Wealthy should pay more than poor

In future, parents will pay school fees for their children at Catholic schools in Berlin according to their income. The system will be changed from the 2024/25 school year, as announced by the Archdiocese of Berlin on Wednesday. Additional income is expected to flow into the quality of the schools. The church also assumes "that it will be more socially just".

School fees currently amount to 110 euros per month. From the 2024/25 school year, a minimum monthly amount of 20 euros will apply up to a lower limit of 25,000 euros taxable annual income. After that, 3.4 percent of taxable income will be due up to an upper limit of 150,000 euros. With such a high income, the monthly amount calculated over twelve months can therefore be up to 425 euros. Reductions should be possible for siblings and hardship cases.

According to its own information, the Archdiocese of Berlin has 26 schools with 8,500 school places and 900 workplaces in Berlin and Brandenburg.

In this new system, families with higher incomes will pay more significant school fees for their children in Catholic schools. This change, set to take effect from the 2024/25 school year, aims to provide better education quality while affirming a more socially just approach, as stated by the Church.
