Heritage site being preserved - Cathedral revamping in Limburg set for 2026
The restoration project for the Limburg Cathedral is set to kick off in 2026, as per the state government's plans. In response to a request from FDP, Finance Minister Alexander Lorz explained that the bidding process for the extensive roof and facade renovation is ongoing.
The bidding process is scheduled to conclude in September 2024, with construction work commencing in January 2026. Earlier start dates are not required, according to the minister, due to the current state of damage and ongoing maintenance activities. Some smaller repair works will be undertaken before the major overhaul begins.
FDP MP Marion Schardt-Sauer states that repair works on the roof were supposed to start back in 2017 at a cost of 8.2 million euros. The finance minister, in turn, expects the construction costs for the roof and facade restoration to around 13 million euros. The primary cause of the increased cost is attributed to the general price growth in the construction industry. In addition, some extra services were included.
However, the exact expenses might still change," the response to the small request notes. "More cost increases cannot be excluded at present, given that final inspections will only take place after the scaffolding is set up." The cathedral's restoration is a top priority for the Hessian government, who consider it a culturally significant monument.
