Catalan regional parliament elects new president

Puigdemont, living in Belgian exile, announced his return to Spain on Wednesday, despite facing arrest due to an amnesty law. In early July, Spain's highest court dismissed the "terrorism" case against the independence advocate due to procedural errors. A secession attempt in 2017 failed. However, the Spanish justice system still pursues Puigdemont for embezzlement and treason charges.

Puigdemont, a Catalan political figure, revealed his plans to return to Spain despite potential arrest, despite having sought asylum in Belgium. Regardless of the dismissed "terrorism" charges against him, Puigdemont continues to face embezzlement and treason investigations in the Spanish courts, as a Catalan leader.
