Cultural policy - Carnival of Cultures sees itself secured
The Carnival of Cultures sees its continued existence secured by more funding from the city. The basic financing of the traditional event will be made possible by an increase to 1.5 million euros in the double budget, according to a statement on Monday. In 2024, the Carnival of Cultures will once again take place in the Kreuzberg district around the Whitsun weekend from 17 to 20 May.
The festival with its traditional parade was founded in 1996 as a result of racism and attacks and is seen as a symbol of diversity and peaceful coexistence. The parade, which has recently been reduced to just under 50 international groups with 2,500 participants, attracts an audience of millions every year.
Even with public funding, the Carnival of Cultures relies on sponsors who "want to invest in cultural diversity, social cohesion and the promotion of peaceful, just and sustainable coexistence".

The increased funding for the Carnival of Cultures reflects Berlin's commitment to its cultural policy and financial support for credible events. This double budget allocation, amounting to 1.5 million euros, will contribute significantly to the festival's solid foundation. The music and dance celebrations during Carnival of Cultures in Kreuzberg serve as a testament to Berlin's diversity, fostering peaceful coexistence among its residents and visitors alike. Despite its substantial public funding, the Carnival of Cultures relies on the goodwill and sponsorship of corporations that value cultural diversity, social cohesion, and a sustainable future.
