Shipping - Cargo ship runs aground in the Rhine near Lorch
A cargo ship ran aground on the Rhine near Lorch on Saturday. In an emergency call, the crew reported that water was leaking into the ship, according to the Lorch fire department. The emergency services from the Rheingau-Taunus district and Rhineland-Palatinate were alerted and later determined that only small amounts of water had entered the engine room.
The leak was sealed by the ship's crew. No one was reportedly injured in the incident. Shipping traffic was not affected. The operation was completed after one and a half hours, according to the fire department.
There had already been another incident on the Rhine near Lorch on Thursday afternoon, which had triggered a major firefighting operation. A cargo ship had caught fire. The fire was eventually extinguished and no one was injured.
