Traffic - Car sharing is only an issue in the big cities
Car sharing has so far almost exclusively been an issue in the major cities in Saxony-Anhalt. As a survey by Deutsche Presse-Agentur shows, with the exception of the Harz region, car sharing is almost only available in the state's larger cities. Halle is in the lead by a wide margin. However, data from the Bundesverband Carsharing also shows that other cities in Germany have expanded their services more significantly than the cities in Saxony-Anhalt in recent years.
According to the federal association, Halle has the most car sharing cars in Saxony-Anhalt. More than 210 vehicles are available here. In a nationwide comparison, Halle was ranked 20th in the last city ranking in 2022. According to the association's calculations, there are 0.88 car sharing vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants. Magdeburg came in 63rd place. Ten years ago, Magdeburg was in 29th place and Halle in 18th place.
Halle is currently working on a holistic mobility concept, which will be completed shortly. This concept also describes the expansion of stationary car sharing in the various city districts and at bus stops.
Several municipalities and districts in the Harz region joined forces last year with the Ein Harz initiative to establish a comprehensive car sharing network. In Saxony-Anhalt, Wernigerode and Halberstadt are among the 16 locations in the Harz region. According to a spokeswoman for the city of Wernigerode, the utilization rate is in line with expectations. There is also increasing interest in the various districts.
Just a few weeks ago, Aschersleben signed a contract for a car sharing service. There are also specially advertised parking spaces in the towns of Wittenberg and Dessau-Roßlau. The other towns and municipalities in the state reported that demand was very low due to their rural structures and that there were therefore no offers.
BUND in Saxony-Anhalt also points this out. Car sharing is a good tool that enables people to use a car without owning one. It fills a gap, said state managing director Christan Kunz when asked, but can only have a limited effect in rural areas in particular. Here, sophisticated public transport services are probably the most important building block for the transport transition.
