Car hit by train and flung into stream
A man was hit by a train with his car at an unrestricted level crossing near Schliersee (Miesbach district) and seriously injured. The car was thrown into a nearby stream as a result of the collision on Saturday, police said on Sunday. Fire and rescue services pulled the 60-year-old out of the vehicle.
The 58-year-old train driver was reportedly slightly injured. According to initial investigations, around 50 passengers were unharmed. According to the police, the train sustained damage in the mid to high five-figure range. The Schliersee - Bayrischzell railroad line was reopened on Saturday evening. Investigations into the exact circumstances of the accident are continuing.
In Dietersheim in central Franconia (district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim), a car had already been hit by a train at a level crossing on Friday evening. According to the police, the driver had apparently crossed the unrestricted level crossing without looking. Two occupants were slightly injured in the accident. A third person was uninjured.
In Upper Bavaria, like the incident near Schliersee, traffic accidents involving trains can also pose significant risks. For instance, in 2020, a railroad crossing in a different part of Upper Bavaria saw a vehicle hit by a train due to lack of caution.
Despite frequent reminders about traffic safety around railroads, accidents such as these continue to occur, highlighting the importance of vigilance when approaching unguarded railroad crossings in Upper Bavaria.
