Director - Cannes Film Festival: Greta Gerwig becomes jury president
The US director of the hit film "Barbie", Greta Gerwig, will be the jury president of next year's Cannes Film Festival. She is only the second American woman to take on the role after actress Olivia de Havilland in the 1960s, the festival announced on Thursday morning. The 40-year-old has broken all records this year with "Barbie". The choice was obvious, festival president Iris Knobloch was quoted as saying. Gerwig embodies the renewal of cinema.
As a film fan, for her Cannes is the pinnacle of what the universal language of film can represent. She is overwhelmed, thrilled and honored, the festival quoted the American director, actress and screenwriter as saying.
With the feminist satire"Barbie", she became the first female director of a film to exceed the billion dollar box office. The comedy about the Mattel doll turned human was nominated in nine categories at the Golden Globes on January 7. The Californian made her breakthrough as a director in 2017 with "Lady Bird". With "Little Women", she celebrated another success with several Oscar nominations (and an award for costume design). As an actress, she has appeared in "Greenberg" and "Frances Ha", among others.
According to the press release, Gerwig has become known as "the muse of independent American cinema". The 40-year-old succeeds Swedish director Ruben Östlund, who chaired the jury last May. The festival on the Côte d'Azur will take place for the 77th time next year - from May 14 to 25.
