Municipalities - Candidate raises objection to OB election in Ulm

One of five candidates has lodged an objection to the mayoral election in Ulm on December 3. As the regional council in Tübingen explained on Tuesday, this is a candidate who is not eligible for the run-off election next Sunday (December 17) due to his result. The regional council did not disclose who this candidate was. The "Südwest Presse" had initially reported.

According to the regional council, the candidate had raised doubts about the established election result. The authority has announced that it will examine the objection, but a decision is no longer expected this year.

The run-off election is not initially affected by the objection. However, should the first election be declared invalid, the run-off election would be invalid and a re-run or new election would have to take place.

None of the five candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote in the mayor's election on December 3. For this reason, a run-off election between the first-placed incumbent Gunter Czisch (CDU) and the second-placed Martin Ansbacher (SPD) is now necessary next Sunday.

According to the regional council, an election can be declared invalid if, among other things, electoral interference, voter fraud or voter coercion has been committed or if regulations regarding the determination and establishment of the election result have not been observed. "However, a mandatory requirement for an election to be annulled is that the election result would possibly have been different without the error," said a spokesperson for the regional council.
