Canceled and unpunctual trains: less money for railroads

Train services in Schleswig-Holstein are running anything but smoothly. Now the state no longer wants to pay for services not provided by Deutsche Bahn.

Railroad - Canceled and unpunctual trains: less money for railroads

Schleswig-Holstein is increasing the pressure on Deutsche Bahn due to unpunctual and canceled trains. From January, the state will withhold 550,000 euros per month in addition to the previous contractual penalty payments, said Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) in Kiel on Thursday. "This regulation will apply until DB Regio reliably provides the contractually required seating capacity for passengers on the RE 7 and RE 70 lines and cleanliness has noticeably improved."

Punctuality on the routes between Flensburg and Hamburg as well as Kiel and Hamburg fell to below 40 percent in some cases in October and November, whereby canceled trains are not included in the statistics. The Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Regio is responsible for regional transportation throughout Germany. According to Madsen, the contractual penalties due to missing vehicles on the network amounted to around 1.5 million euros last year.

According to Madsen, the money withheld should motivate Deutsche Bahn to solve the problems quickly: "Things that have been neglected for decades will no longer work at some point and will have to be renovated." The problem will therefore not be solved overnight - to the annoyance of commuters and travelers in general.

"Of course, passengers want to get from A to B," emphasized Arne Beck, Managing Director of local transport company NAH.SH. However, there is currently no fully available infrastructure - it is rather "museum-like" and is further restricted by roadworks. The aim must be to provide passengers with a reliable timetable. A temporary solution could also be to run fewer trains, but on time.

According to DB Regio regional manager Torsten Reh, the railroad has already launched a quality offensive. Additional double-decker trains are being deployed in order to offer comparable capacity.
