Many have wondered if it's possible to transfer their parking ticket to others. The search for parking spaces can often be problematic and stressful for drivers, especially in large cities. To avoid additional hassle, it's useful to know common parking mistakes.

Sometimes, a ticket is issued for a time-limited parking space, but there are still several minutes or even hours left. Then the question arises: can you simply pass it on to the next person who wants to park in this area?

Can you transfer your parking ticket: What rules and restrictions apply

In fact, according to Bernd Schening, a road law specialist, transferring a still-valid parking ticket to another person is allowed.

The ticket grants the right to use parking spaces in public lots only for a specific period.

It is not tied to the buyer's car, so the next person can easily use it. In this case, caution should only be exercised by the person accepting and using someone else's ticket.

Depending on how much time is left on the ticket and how long the parking space will be used, the driver may need to immediately obtain a second ticket. This will be required if the plan is to leave the car for a longer period than what remains on the transferred ticket.

According to a road law specialist, the situation is different with private paid parking spaces:

From a purely legal standpoint, there is a "civil-law lease agreement" between the ticket buyer and the parking operator, establishing rights and obligations for using the parking space.

As a result of this arrangement, the official transfer of the ticket is prohibited. To determine whether the parking area belongs to a private individual or municipality, drivers should always pay attention to information boards or ticket usage conditions.

Illegal parking should not be taken lightly, as fines can be high. According to "bussgeld-info", exceeding the parking time by just 30 minutes without a parking disc or ticket incurs a fee of 20 euros, with an additional 5 euros for each additional half-hour.

Despite the allowance to transfer a valid parking ticket in public lots in Germany, this rule does not apply to private paid parking spaces. According to a civil-law lease agreement between the ticket buyer and the parking operator, the official transfer of the ticket is prohibited in such areas.
