Call for warning strike at Hamburg universities on Monday
The trade union Verdi has called on university employees in Hamburg to go on a warning strike on Monday. On the same day, an alliance of trade unions, initiatives, student representatives and university policy organizations is calling for a nationwide university action day under the slogan "An end to precarious science!", the union announced on Wednesday. This alliance is campaigning for "an end to precarious working and study conditions" with days of action in more than 50 cities - including Hamburg.
Specifically, the alliance is demanding "significant" salary increases for employees and a nationwide collective agreement for the more than 300,000 student employees as part of the collective bargaining round for the public service of the federal states. There are also demands that go beyond the collective bargaining round. According to the union, these include higher student loan rates, a fundamental reform of the law on temporary academic contracts and research and teaching that is financed independently of third-party funding and project funding.
The trade union alliance, alongside university employees and policy organizations, is pushing for a increase in salaries and a national agreement for student workers within the public service's collective bargaining round. Moreover, they propose higher student loan rates, a reform of temporary academic contracts law, and self-financed research and teaching as additional demands, in the context of the nationwide university action day on Monday.
