Call for Suspending the "De Minimis Limit" in EM

Police officers in North Rhine-Westphalia are barred from logging any overtime after their fifth hour of work. The local police union seeks to temporarily suspend this rule for the European Football Championship and, ideally, eliminate it entirely.

Law enforcement labor organization - Call for Suspending the "De Minimis Limit" in EM

The Police Union (GdP) in North Rhine-Westphalia is calling on Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) to revoke the "insignificant threshold" for police officers and policewomen during the European Football Championship. "Reul should recall his promise: Overtime shouldn't be wasted," commented the head of the GdP in North Rhine-Westphalia, Michael Mertens, in a statement on Sunday.

Context: Since 2000, this "insignificant threshold" has been in place for all civil servants in the state, which means that they can only document their work after five hours of labor. The impending European Championship will subject the police in North Rhine-Westphalia to immense pressure and require substantial overtime, says Mertens. By canceling the "insignificant threshold" for the EM months of June and July, Reul could demonstrate his support for the police.

In previous times, this subject has been debated. As early as February, Mertens had urged Reul to permanently exemempt the police from the "insignificant threshold."
