Theater - Cabaret prize ScharfrichterBeil is awarded
The ScharfrichterBeil cabaret prize will be awarded for the 40th time in Passau. It is aimed at up-and-coming artists and is one of the most prestigious cabaret prizes in the German-speaking world. Comedian Hape Kerkeling will be on the jury for the anniversary competition on Wednesday (18:00) at the Scharfrichterhaus. The 58-year-old was awarded the first ScharfrichterBeil in 1983. Kerkeling was still a high school student at the time, but today he is one of the most successful German-speaking comedians.
"I have been able to practise my profession for 40 years. That fills me with gratitude and humility. I am very happy to return to Passau," Kerkeling recently told dpa. He considers the ScharfrichterBeil to be his most important, because it is his first prize.
Meanwhile, one of the co-founders of the Passau Scharfrichterhaus, Walter Landshuter, is worried about the next generation of cabaret artists in Germany. "I'm not very optimistic," he recently told the Süddeutsche Zeitung. "There is actually an insane amount of material for satire, but people who have the talent and commitment to really say something are few and far between."
