On Sunday, more inhabitants of Rhineland-Palatinate took part in European and local elections than they did five years ago. Based on preliminary data from a sample survey conducted by the state election committee in selected areas, approximately 48% of the eligible voters had either cast their ballots or mailed in their ballots by noon. This marks a 5% increase compared to the same period in the past.
About 37% of eligible voters had already submitted their votes by mail this time around, which is an eight percent increase compared to 2019. Conversely, just 11% had cast their votes in person, reflecting a 5% dip compared to the same time frame in 2019.
The participation rate in the 2019 European elections in Rhineland-Palatinate stood at 64.8%. In terms of the municipal polls, 61.7% of eligible citizens participated.
Election supervisor Marcel Hürter urged all eligible voters to cast their ballots. Polls were set to remain open until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Due to sunny weather, queues could be seen outside certain polling stations. For instance, one polling station in Mainz's Neustadt district had a queue that spanned around 50 meters.
The election committee oversees the services of more than 50,000 election workers. The outcome of the European election in Rhineland-Palatinate won't be disclosed before 11:00 p.m. The results for local polls are expected to be revealed sometime in the middle of the following week due to the intricate voting process. The announcement for mayor and county council elections is slated for Sunday evening.
