BVG with "noticeably more passengers" due to GDL warning strike
Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) have recorded "noticeably more" passengers in their vehicles in the morning in view of the warning strike on the railroads. "As a rule, the vehicle capacities were sufficient. In some cases, however, passengers had to wait for the next journey," the company announced on Thursday.
Due to the increased number of passengers and the additional traffic on the roads, there were delays of up to 20 minutes for bus and streetcar journeys at times, and up to 10 minutes for the subway due to high passenger demand. "After the rush hour, punctuality levels normalized noticeably," it said.
The buses, subway trains, streetcars and ferries in Berlin are not affected by the warning strike of the train drivers' union GDL - unlike the Berlin S-Bahn, which is operated by Deutsche Bahn. Accordingly, the majority of services there were canceled.
The warning strike was due to continue until 18:00 on Thursday evening. Almost all regional trains in Berlin and Brandenburg were canceled on Thursday morning due to the industrial action.
Given the railroad strikes, tariffs for alternate modes of transportation like buses and streetcars might temporarily increase to accommodate the surge in traffic and passengers, potentially affecting tariff-sensitive commuters. The ongoing strikes and increased traffic may also lead to more frequent railroad strikes, potentially causing further disruptions to transportation and traffic flow.
