BVG cancels numerous bus connections: Drivers are missing

Berlin's public transport operator BVG is having to further reduce its bus services due to the current shortage of around 350 drivers. "We will reduce the bus service by six percent compared to the normal timetable," said BVG Operations Director Rolf Erfurt in Berlin. The labor market situation in local public transport is very tight. "In addition, staff turnover has increased among our fully trained bus drivers," said Erfurt. The BVG hopes that thinning out the timetable will lead to greater reliability and reduce spontaneous cancellations.

The transport company is already offering fewer bus journeys than originally planned. The original plan for the coming year was to run around 100 million bus kilometers, but due to the thinning out it is now expected to be around 94 million kilometers.

According to the company, the timetables will be adjusted primarily outside of peak times. "Adjustments will primarily be made where the network is particularly dense," BVG announced. Where possible, larger vehicles will be used. Large school locations or hospitals will remain well connected. "All 6500 stops will continue to be served regularly," Erfurt emphasized.

A precise overview of which lines will be reduced and at what times is not yet available. It should be available by 14 days before the timetable change on the second weekend in December.

The ongoing traffic in Berlin might face delays due to BVG's reduced bus services. This decision, made due to a shortage of around 350 drivers in the public transport labor market, could also impact the employability of individuals seeking jobs in this sector. Further, the reliance on public transport for commuting to large schools or hospitals might remain unaltered, as these locations will continue to be well-served by larger vehicles.
