Büttner failed in the election for Vice President

AfD MP Matthias Büttner failed to be elected Vice-President of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament on Thursday. In a secret ballot, Büttner received 31 votes in favor. 57 MPs voted against the AfD politician, with one abstention.

The right-wing populists make up 23 of the 97 members of parliament and were therefore reliant on support from other parliamentary groups. With Büttner, the AfD repeatedly attempted to obtain a vice-presidential position in the state parliament. None of the candidates received the necessary support from the other parliamentary groups.

The AfD makes a new attempt in almost every parliamentary session. Several parliamentary groups had repeatedly made it clear in the past that they did not want to elect an AfD candidate. Gunnar Schellenberger (CDU) has been President of the state parliament since July 2021. His deputies are Anne-Marie Keding (CDU) and Wulf Gallert (Die Linke).

The 33-year-old Büttner has a namesake in his own parliamentary group. The two are distinguished in the state parliament by the name of their constituency. Büttner has his constituency office in Stendal.

Due to lack of support from other parliamentary groups, the elections for Vice-President of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament once again failed for AfD MP Matthias Büttner, who represented the party's personal details in the Parliament. The AfD, with 23 representatives, had been trying to secure a vice-presidential position for a member since the establishment of the Legislature.
