Businessperson safeguards 21 automotive repair outlets in Germany.
For a while now, The Body Shop has been a popular choice in German urban areas. However, due to the UK headquarters' insolvency in February, the 45 German outlets were also in danger. Fortunately, an investor named Stefan Herzberg sees potential in the brand and has acquired control over 21 German stores.
The Body Shop's products can still be bought in Germany as reported by "Wirtschaftswoche". Herzberg, who had been waiting for the opportunity, seized the chance to acquire this renowned brand. Back in February, the British parent company filed for insolvency, and shortly after, The Body Shop Germany followed suit. Biner Bähr, the insolvency administrator, mentioned there were several parties interested initially, but many backed out due to the lengthy sale process of the UK company. Recently, investment firm Aurea, led by British entrepreneur Mike Jatania, acquired the chain.
The Body Shop's animal rights roots
As reported by "Wirtschaftswoche", Herzberg stated that a long-term franchise agreement was finalized now that The Body Shop has a new owner in the UK. He expressed his optimism that The Body Shop could make a comeback in Germany. In the near future, he even envisions opening new branches and potential expansion into other countries. No information regarding the purchase price was disclosed by either Herzberg or Bähr.
Animal rights advocate Anita Roddick launched The Body Shop in 1976 in British Brighton. The company offered ethically-sourced and natural ingredients from around the world, sold in simple, refillable packaging as stated on their website.
In 2006, French giant L'Oréal bought The Body Shop for approximately 940 million euros. Roddick faced heavy criticism for this decision. She passed away in 2007. In 2017, the company was sold for one billion euros to Brazilian competitor Natura Cosméticos. Lastly, in 2023, The Body Shop was acquired by German investment fund Aurelius for a far lesser sum.
The retail trade of The Body Shop's products in Germany continues despite the previous ownership issues. Herzberg, with his acquisition of 21 stores, is aiming to revitalize The Body Shop's presence in Germany, even considering expansion to other countries.
Despite being bought by various multinational corporations such as L'Oréal and Natura Cosméticos, The Body Shop's commitment to animal rights and ethically-sourced products has remained a constant.
