Emergency operation - Burst water pipe hinders traffic over Köhlbrand Bridge

A burst water pipe near the Köhlbrand Bridge disrupted traffic in the Port of Hamburg on Thursday. The damage was noticed early in the morning due to a drop in pressure, said a Hamburg Wasser spokesperson. The two-lane road leading to the Köhlbrand Bridge was closed. The road had sunk and the kerb had been partially damaged. An assessment of the damage is not expected until Friday at the earliest, as the emergency services will first have to pump out all the water. For the time being, traffic is running in one lane in both directions on the road towards the city center.

A main drinking water pipe with an internal diameter of 60 centimeters had burst, the spokesman continued. The supply to the districts of Veddel and Wilhelmsburg was not at risk. However, pressure fluctuations and discoloration of the water could occur. According to the information provided, the discoloration is caused by minerals on the inner walls of the pipes, which dissolve due to the change in pressure. They are said to be harmless to health. The cause of the burst pipe was initially unclear. It was the season for such incidents, the spokesperson added, referring to the frosty weather. The "Hamburger Abendblatt" newspaper initially reported on the damage.
