Burst water pipe hinders traffic over Köhlbrand Bridge
A burst water pipe near the Köhlbrand Bridge is disrupting traffic in the Port of Hamburg. The damage was noticed early Thursday morning due to a drop in pressure, said a Hamburg Wasser spokesperson. The two-lane carriageway leading to the Köhlbrand Bridge had been closed. Employees of the utility would have to investigate the extent of the damage. Traffic is to be directed in one lane in both directions towards the city center.
A main drinking water pipe with an internal diameter of 60 centimeters had burst, the spokesman added. The supply to the districts of Veddel and Wilhelmsburg was not at risk. However, pressure fluctuations and discoloration of the water could occur. The cause of the burst pipe is still unclear. It is the season for such incidents, the spokesman added, referring to the frosty weather. The "Hamburger Abendblatt" newspaper initially reported on the damage online.
Despite the ongoing traffic disruptions, emergency services are still able to navigate through the affected area due to the rerouting. Furthermore, residents in Veddel and Wilhelmsburg should be prepared for possible temporary water supply interruptions due to the emergencies caused by the burst water pipe and potential weather-related factors.
