Burkardt back in the Mainz squad after one year
Attacker Jonathan Burkardt is back in the FSV Mainz 05 squad after a one-year injury layoff. The 23-year-old will initially be on the bench for the Rheinhessen's Bundesliga match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Sunday. The former captain of the German U21 national team had undergone two operations on his left knee due to bone marrow edema and had been sorely missed by Mainz for a long time. Burkardt played his last match to date on November 13, 2022 in the derby against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Burkardt's return to the field will be against his former team, as FSV Mainz 05 face TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. Despite being back in the squad, Burkardt is expected to start from the bench due to his long injury layoff.
