Architecture - Bunker St. Pauli: Hotel and restaurant launch in April
A fantastic view over Hamburg and rooms characterized by rock 'n' roll: the hotel, restaurant and roof garden on the Bunker St. Pauli are set to open in spring 2024. The hotel rooms can already be booked for the period from April 7, as the operators said in Hamburg on Thursday. The 38-metre-high anti-aircraft bunker has been raised by five additional floors in recent years. The final phase is now underway and work on the interior is in full swing. It will become a hotspot and landmark of Hamburg, said Marek N. Riegger, Managing Director of RIMC Hotels & Resorts. "It will be very colorful, very creative."
A guided tour of the construction site goes up in an elevator. Cables are still hanging from the ceiling, workers are dragging building materials through empty rooms. There are just under four months to go before the new floors will offer a colorful mix. An event hall with an illuminated floor, which can be divided into three areas, will not only host concerts, but can also be used by nearby schools for sports lessons. Visitors to the Hochbunker can enjoy drinks, snacks and music on several levels in the "Karo & Paul" bar. The "Constant Grind" café and the "La Salsa" restaurant with show cooking will also serve guests.
There will be a large garden for everyone on the roof. According to the information provided, 4700 plants will turn the bunker into a spectacular natural oasis. The green roof and façade of the World War II building is considered a natural air conditioning system. The pioneering landscape architecture project is also being scientifically supervised. Huge wooden benches and numerous plants and trees are already in place. The roof garden can be reached from the outside through airy heights via the so-called mountain path. In the "Rock Shop" in one of the former flak towers, there are not only plenty of souvenirs to buy, but readings and small concerts are also planned.
According to the management, the "Reverb by Hard Rock Hotel" will have 134 rooms, which will cost between 160 and 200 euros per night. During a tour of the construction site, Riegger shows a standard room that has already been completed. The rooms will be designed in the spirit of rock music - the walls will feature artwork depicting guitars and songs will be playable.
A memorial and information point will also be integrated to commemorate the history of the gray concrete colossus on the Heiligengeistfeld. Built in 1942 by forced laborers, the bunker was initially intended to serve primarily as an anti-aircraft defense during the Second World War. "Sources show that up to 25,000 people found shelter in the bunker at times during the bombing raids on the city of Hamburg," according to the building's website.
According to the private developer, it cost around 60 million euros to increase the height to 58 meters and to green the colossus next to the Millerntor stadium. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view over the Hanseatic city.
For safety reasons, there will be a limit on the number of visitors, according to those responsible. "The maximum number for the roof garden is 900 at any one time." This will be monitored. There will be different summer and winter opening times. According to the information provided, the bunker is intended to be a place of encounter and a symbol of diversity, tolerance and respectful coexistence. "It is an experience for everyone," said Riegger.
