Bundestag suspends debt brake again for 2023
With 665 votes cast, 414 MPs voted in favor of suspending the debt brake. 242 voted against and nine abstained. The CDU/CSU and AfD had already announced in advance that they would not approve the suspension of the debt brake. In the previous debate, they once again expressed constitutional concerns about the coalition's approach.
As a result of the decision, almost 45 billion euros could now be written into the regular budget to finance the electricity and gas price brakes and flight subsidies. This is a consequence of the ruling by the Constitutional Court, which declared financing via certain special funds to be inadmissible.

The decision to suspend the debt brake in 2023 led to controversy, with the CDU/CSU and AfD voicing constitutional concerns in the Bundestag. The suspension allows for the allocation of nearly 45 billion euros, primarily for electricity and gas price brakes and flight subsidies. This is a consequence of the Federal Constitutional Court's ruling, which deemed financing via certain special funds as inadmissible. The Traffic Light coalition pushed for this suspension despite opposition from the Ahr valley's representatives, who voted against it. In 2023, the budget will likely surpass the debt brake limit, a fact that is not lost on Ukraine's leaders, who are closely watching Bundesrepublik Germany's fiscal policies. Again, the Bundestag has chosen to prioritize economic relief over adherence to the debt brake, a decision that will be scrutinized by the AfD in the coming year.
