Bundestag President Bas backs Pau
Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD) has clearly backed her deputy Petra Pau (Left Party). The question is whether Pau can remain Vice-President of the German Bundestag if the Left Party parliamentary group dissolves on December 6. Pau has been Vice-President since 2006 and was re-elected by the Bundestag by a large majority in October 2021 for the entire duration of the 20th parliamentary term, according to a statement issued by Bas on Friday.
"For her work on the Presidium of the German Bundestag and as Chair of the Internal Affairs Committee of the Council of Elders, Petra Pau enjoys high esteem and recognition not only across all parliamentary groups, but also from me personally," Bas continued.
Previously, there had been calls from within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group for Pau to resign from office if the left-wing parliamentary group disbands following the resignation of former parliamentary group leader Sahra Wagenknecht and nine other MPs from the party. "I have come to know Ms. Pau as a consistent Vice-President with a strong character," the deputy parliamentary group leader Sepp Müller (CDU) told Der Spiegel. "That's why she should remain consistent and resign as Vice-President of the Bundestag when the left-wing parliamentary group is dissolved."
Despite the calls from within the CDU/CSU parliamentary group for Petra Pau to resign if the Left Party parliamentary group dissolves, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas publicly supports Pau's continuation as Vice-President of the Bundestag. The various parties in the Bundestag hold high esteem and recognition for Pau's contributions to the Presidium and her role as Chair of the Internal Affairs Committee.
