Living - Building Minister: People have a need for greenery and space

According to Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD), the coronavirus pandemic has boosted people's desire for more green spaces and more room to live. This is also one reason why more people are moving back to small and medium-sized towns, she said on the fringes of the Conference of Regional Planning Ministers in Cottbus. "This is also good news for eastern Germany." She did not give any specific figures. Her department is also responsible for spatial planning in urban and rural areas.

The creation of equal living conditions in urban and rural regions is one of the topics on the agenda of the conference of federal and state spatial planning ministers. Strong regional development, more acceleration in planning projects and conflicts of use in the expansion of areas for renewable energies are also to be discussed. According to Geywitz, the overriding question is how "spatial conflicts" can be resolved.

For Nicole Razavi, Minister of Construction in Baden-Württemberg, the main issue is faster planning and approval procedures. "We have launched a planning offensive for the expansion of renewable energies with all 12 regional associations in order to create the conditions for expansion by 2025." This includes legal guidelines in order to be able to approve projects more quickly. "The right division, the right reconciliation of the various interests and different demands on the area and the space - that is the crucial question," said Razavi.

For Klaus Freytag, Lusatia Representative of the Minister President of the State of Brandenburg, the conference of the federal states and the federal government will discuss all the issues that make up successful structural development. "We don't have much time due to the transformation, but we need to get into the processes and visibility quickly so that people don't lose faith in structural and spatial development," said Freytag.
