Church - Budget of the Archdiocese of Bamberg in the red
The Archdiocese of Bamberg is expected to have higher expenditure than income in the coming year. The budget is in the red by 9.9 million euros - mainly due to falling church tax revenues and the wage increase in the public sector, as the archdiocese announced on Wednesday.
For 2024, the archdiocese is therefore planning for income of 229.5 million euros and expenditure of 239.4 million euros. "Rising wages and salaries and the resulting church taxes only partially compensate for the loss of church tax income due to the high number of people leaving the church and declining baptism rates," said Finance Director Mathias Vetter. For the coming year, Bamberg is therefore only expecting church tax income of 172.2 million euros. In the current year, it was still 177.5 million.
Expenditure for pastoral care and for the areas of schools, education, science and art are therefore excluded from the cuts. "Despite all the challenges ahead, people are at the heart of everything the church does," said Vicar General Georg Kestel. Especially in difficult times, characterized by wars and climate change, the church wants to be there for people. "It should be an anchor in turbulent times with its diverse offerings, facilities and services." To this end, the available resources should be used in a targeted and responsible manner.
The archdiocese, which has around 606,000 Catholics, intends to make up the expected shortfall from reserves.
