Budget for 2024 to be adopted as planned

Despite the large gap in the federal budget, Lower Saxony's state government currently expects to be able to pass the state budget for 2024 in the state parliament in December as planned. This was announced by the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Finance in Hanover on Wednesday.

However, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance emphasized that it was not yet clear whether the federal government would take austerity measures that would also affect Lower Saxony or lead to a loss of federal funding.

Following the budget ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court, there is a large gap in the federal budget. Last week, the Federal Constitutional Court declared a reallocation of loans of 60 billion euros in the 2021 budget null and void.

In the December plenary session, the governing parties want to adopt the state budget for the coming year. In total, the budget is set to include around 42.3 billion euros, almost one percent more than this year.

Given the potential impact of federal austerity measures or changes in federal funding, it's crucial for Lower Saxony households to carefully manage their own finances. This budget uncertainty also highlights the importance of maintaining a robust household budget plan for the upcoming year.
