Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance - BSW may nominate candidates for election in Brandenburg
The Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) and Values Union are allowed to propose candidates for the Brandenburg State Election on September 22. The Electoral Committee decided roughly two and a half months before the election that a total of seven parties and two political associations are additionally eligible. This was announced by the office of Electoral Commissioner Herbert Trimbach.
Apart from BSW and Values Union, the Constitutional Protection Agency has classified as right-wing extremist Third Way, The League, Democrats Brandenburg, and German Economy (DLW) are also eligible.
BSW was founded nationally by former Left Party politician Sahra Wagenkhecht, and Values Union by former Constitutional Protection Chief Hans-Georg Maassen. Both have established a local branch in Brandenburg.
Not all parties need to register for the election
The committee also decided that Pirate Party, Volt, and Ecological-Democratic Party (ODP) can run as a joint list for the State Election under the name "Plus Brandenburg."
The 23 parties and associations that participated in the State Election 2019 and the Federal Election 2021 do not need to submit a separate application for participation. However, they must submit personnel proposals for district candidates and the state list by August 5.
Six state lists are currently under review with the Electoral Commissioner Trimbach. The Electoral Committee will make a decision on the approval of the lists on August 9. Until then, the district electoral committees of the 44 electoral districts must decide on the approval of the candidates for a direct mandate.
Seven parties or associations do not need to submit signatures of support to the Electoral Commissioner: SPD, AfD, CDU, Greens, Linke, BVB/Free Voters, and the FDP. They were present at the announcement of the election date in the Landtag or Bundestag. All others must submit 100 signatures for a district nomination and 2,000 signatures for the state list by August 5.
